Designing a 24/7 Carbon-Free Electricity Transition Tariff
Переглядів 2429 місяців тому
A 24/7 carbon-free electricity transition tariff is a tool to accelerate decarbonization generally while addressing times and places on the grid where emissions have been most difficult to reduce. 24/7 transition tariffs are different from the green tariffs that match annual consumption with annual renewable energy production; instead, they seek to match a customer’s hourly consumption with del...

    Don't forget to keep it nice and complicated so that we can be esily ripped off by the participating corporations and never even know it.

    Excellent presentation! Really informative and well done. However, I did notice that the audio and video weren't quite syncing up for me. It seemed like Jim was speaking to the next slide (or sometimes a few slides ahead) while the visuals were showing something different. Just wanted to mention it in case others are experiencing the same. Still, great content overall!

    Seems like you also need to include the cost of intermittency into these calculations. All generating resources need some form of backup for reliable grid operation. For conventional generation it’s having additional resources available so generators can be rotated off line for maintenance and to have resources to bring on line in case of an unexpected failure. With wind and solar there is a much higher level of intermittency that requires backup, shouldn’t this cost (storage) be factored into the LCOE for these sources?

    How would we adjust this model to take into consideration monopolistic practices? I see in a free market with lots of competition limiting price isn’t helpful, I’m just curious what the optimal choice would be for a single company who controls the entire market. Would they be incentivized to overbuild base generators and overcharge?

    It sounds like you're going to bankrupt the middle-class who now have oil furnaces. This country won't be happy until the Middle-class is completely obliterated, leaving only the very poor, and you old rich wh a$sholes left. Bunch of double talk in this vid that is not helpful.

    would the missing money capital market also be impacted with offset demand, and how would the complication of voluntary vs compulsory commitments be factored in??

    • @itsmebougie
      @itsmebougie 8 місяців тому

      Are you saying with capped price demand would be impacted? Also are you talking about how the bids are voluntary, and the price caps aren’t, so what sort of impacts does that have on market outcomes?

    Let's assume that we have to displace a coal-fired power plant. We have the possibility to either build a wind farm or a gas-fired power plant. What would be the LACE of the wind farm? The cost of the energy produced by coal plant we are displacing or the one of the gas plant?

    Excellent series of mini lectures so far. Consider this a thumbs up for the previous 32. So here in 33 is where the problems start. You make assumptions that rates are determined by variable costs alone. While this might be true in the extreme short term it is far from true in the long term because investors don't invest expecting not to cover all their costs over time. Rates are kept low over time by selecting the lowest LCOE plants to run, and LCOE must include a pro rata formula to derate plants which offer low ratios of firm capacity to average output (annual CF x nameplate MW). Using the lowest marginal cost plants first ensures only the lowest cost for power for that hour. To keep a system stable over time, we must use the lowest capacity credit adjusted LCOE plants in their optimum capacity factor ranges. Build/mix decisions depend on load profile and existing mix operating and marginal cost characteristics.
